Bega defeat reserves

August 10th 2009

The Tigers reserve grade side was looking for an improved showing after some fairly disappointing efforts over the last few weeks, and when evergreen Shane Mongta scored after just four minutes the Eden fans hopes were raised.
The Tigers were doing everything right in the early stages , completing their sets and getting their kicks in. Bega had a stroke of luck regaining a kick after an Eden player had touched the ball and scored their first. There was no luck involved when Bega scored from the kickoff and the winger Bell sprinted 80 metres to score and move the score to 12-4.

Once again proving unstoppable is Sugar Mongta
James Cartwright and Wayne Wykes were leading the forwards by example, while Scott Munday,Nick Bowes, Sugar and Laurence Bamblett were standouts in the backline. Corey Stewart jnr and Dylan Wheeler were backing up from the 18's and also made an impact.
The scores remained at 12-4 up to the break with both sides having an excellent completion rate- Eden 10 from 14 and failing to kick and turning over 3 times, while Bega completed 12 from 18. Coach Corey Stewart urged his side to continue their good work in defence and attack, and when the teams returned Eden struck immediately with Sugar Mongta scoring his second try to narrow the gap to just 2 at 12-10.
Bega replied quickly when Pittman scored , but that man Mongta soon crossed for his third and it looked set for a monumental finish with the scores at 18-16 to Bega.
James Cartwright giving a bega defender the shove.
The events that followed are still a bit of a mystery. Following a Bega penalty Bega scored a try, then after two consecutive penalties to Bega they scored again. Bega then got back to back sets after an attempted intercept didn't stick, when Eden did get the ball they dropped it on the second tackle and Bega scored again, and then almost immediately an Eden player was tackled into touch on the first tackle and Bega scored again and it was as good as over at 42-16. Unlucky spectators who visited the amenities would have been puzzled on their return to find the game had changed so quickly!
The game then meandered to a timid end with both sides dropping the ball and turning over possession.
However the good news is that the Tigers reserves live to fight another day, and that day is next Sunday when we take on the Pambula Merimbula Bulldogs at Cooma in an elimination Semi-Final.
