Eden Tigers Brand Sun

Rampaging Reserves tame Tathra

May 9th 2010 by Dave Evelyn

The Tigers reserve grade side took on the Tathra side on Sunday at George Brown Oval keen to get their quest for the premiership back on the rails after a disappointing effort against Bega last start. Eden received three early penalties which enabled them to put some sustained pressure on the Tathra defence and the inevitable Eden try was posted by Michael Shelfhout out wide after a very clever pass from Nick Smith. The Matt Creswick conversion from the sideline was a glorious kick in the swirling breezy conditions. The Eden forwards were playing inspired football hitting the ball up hard. Nic Rowe and Matt Spivey were effective every time they took the ball.
The Eden side settled down to play solid football completing their sets and getting good kicks in, and when play was called back for a Tathra forward pass the Tigers mounted an irresistible attack featuring a huge run by young Cory Stewart who got a beautiful inside ball to Blake Russell who scored under the posts. The Creswick conversion took the score to 12-0.
Tathra hit back shortly after with a try out wide which was not converted. The Tathra resurgence was quickly quelled when Nick Smith swooped on a loose pass and sprinted away for another Eden try, converted again to give Eden a solid 18-4 lead at half time.
Coach Brian Rowe was very happy with his charges at the break and urged them to continue completing their sets and maintaining intensity in defence.
The second half began with Cory Stewart bringing the crowd to life with a huge run to return the kickoff. Within a couple of minutes Eden were back on the attack and Dylan Fletcher scored a spectacular try from 30 out, dummying and splitting the inside defence to score under the posts. The conversion was successful. Tathra attempted to regroup and turned on some strong defence, but the Eden boys matched them for enthusiasm with Mark McKeon putting in some strong defence.
When Michael Thompson stormed over for the next try next to the posts Eden looked to have the game in their keeping. Tathra crossed for the next try to put some respectability on the scoreboard, but that was somewhat diminished as Laurence Bamblett set up a neat try for Matt Creswick after another good Thompson burst, and then struck again himself to take the score to 42-8.
Mick Schelfhout scored his second right on full time and the final score was 46-8.
This was a very strong performance by all the Tigers boys, and they are definitely fired up to take on the Cooma Stallions next weekend in sunny Cooma.
