Stallions Bring Reserves Back to Earth

Cooma 40 Eden 6

May 16th 2010 by Dave Evelyn

The Eden reserve grade roller coaster resumed at Cooma on Sunday. Following a big loss against Bega, and a subsequent huge win over Tathra, Tigers fans were unsure what to expect from the talented but unpredictable reserve grade side. The game began scrappily with both sides spilling possession on early tackles until Cooma's Corey Elton scored the first try. Blake Russell and Jamie Mohammed featured in some good early defence, while Nic Rowe gained good yards in attack. The match seemed to be meandering towards half time until Cooma , on the back of some sustained possession, scored again minutes before the break to extend their lead to 10-0. In the remaining five minutes before the break Cooma scored three more tries as Eden went into hibernation, and in the blink of an eye Cooma had built an imposing 24-0 lead.

The second half was only minutes old when Eden's prodical son Liam Wilkinson, making a cameo appearance, burst through for a trademark Wilko try. With Dylan Fletcher converting the score was 24-6, and optimistic Tigers fans anticipated a second half resurgence. Unfortunately Cooma scored next following two consecutive penalties and a dropped ball by the Tigers to extend their lead to 28-6. To their credit, the Eden boys never gave up and the score didn't change for nearly all the remaining time. Cooma scored two late tries to make the final score 40-6, but the score in no way gave an accurate impression of the game, with the Eden team suffering for several minor lapses in concentration. The four tries just before half time really hurt our overall effort.

Once again Lawrence Bamblett was inspirational, Mick Schelfhout worked hard, and Dave Wattham did a lot of hard work up the middle. Juniors Dylan Fletcher and Andrew Evelyn again acquitted themselves very well against the big Cooma side.
