Dogs tame Tigers in 18's thriller

May 16th 2010

The Eden Tigers under 18's took on the Pambula side last Saturday evening in Pambula. Returning Tigers john Hunt and John Kendall were a welcome sight when the sides ran out, although Eden was without injured playmaker and goal kicker Dylan Fletcher.
The match was played with the usual under 18's testosterone fuelled intensity, and Eden's early defence looked sound. The Tigers' hooker Andrew Evelyn scored the first try from dummy half to give the visitors an early 4-0 lead, which was short lived when lazy Eden defence gave the Pambula side a penalty which they capitalised on to score their first and take the lead 6-4. Play worked from end to end for most of the remainder of the first half, with both sides getting to their kicks and defending stoutly. Toby Timms and Pixie Geraghty were very good for the Tigers putting in some great hits and when Toby crossed for the next try Eden regained the lead 8-6. On the stroke of half time Cory Stewart stormed over for another unconverted try and at the break the Tigers led12-6.
After the break the arm wrestle continued, with Pambula getting the benefit of a disallowed Eden try by Cody Crane which baffled most spectators. Pambula struck back with two quick tries to take a 14-12 lead. Before, in the turning point in the game when the Dogs won a scrum against the feed and scored a soft try to take a 20-12 lead.. Eden struck back when Toby Timms scored his second try , again unconverted, but when the home side received two consecutive penalties and converted the second into 2 points to take a 22-16 lead which they held until full time.
This was a game the Tigers really should have won, but handling and defensive lapses at key times let them down. The goalkicking ultimately cost the game with 4 tries to each side. For the Tigers Cody Crane, Dylan Wheeler and Chris Challinor had very good games, Jamie Mohammed and Andrew Evelyn got through lots of work in attack and defence. Kendall and Hunt showed glimpses of what they are capable of and will be a huge plus for the side as they gain match fitness.
