Eden Tigers Brand Sun

Tigers Cook Chooks

June 6th 2010 by Dave Evelyn

The Tigers faced Bega in what was a must win game, having lost their opening games in the competition and languishing at the bottom of the points table. A good crowd witnessed the debut of English import Tommie Lynch and the return of Marcus Shearer, with the pom getting stuck in from the opening whistle and immediately making an impression on the Bega defence.

Marcus Shearer returned to the Tigers on Sunday

As expected the early exchanges were fierce, with the Tiger forwards hunting as a pack. Neil Baker , Billy Michelin and Leigh Hennessy were heavily involved.
Eden broke the deadlock when newly promoted hooker Laurence Bamblett showed blistering acceleration in an angled run to the line. Todd Bolton's conversion put the Tigers ahead 6-0.
The Tigers were looking very strong as the half time break loomed, dominating possession and field position. The freakish Tom Bell scored Eden's second try ( amazingly predicted by Jacko- player, tackle and position being called at the start of the set!) which was unconverted for a 10-0 lead. He then scored again after strong lead up work by Dane Bamblett and the first half came to a close with Eden up 14-0.

Tom Bell Scored a double against the Roosters

The Tigers took the field after the break expecting Bega to come at them hard, and that is exactly what happened. Matt Bell began making serious inroads into the Defence, but after a Bega penalty and a dubious six to go call Bega's Sean Piper scored to bring the score to 14-6.
The territorial battle continued with both sides getting to their kicks and looking for a mistake. Hennessy was heavily involved in defence and attack, the indestructible Baker led by example, and Billy Michelin was inflicting pain with heavy defence before slipping a beautiful pass to Matt Bell who scored out wide. The conversion from the sideline bounced over off the crossbar and the Tigers led 20-6.
The Bega side showed poor discipline to concede consecutive penalties and when Matt Bell scored his second try the Tigers had the game wrapped up 26-6.
It would be impossible to pick a man of the match in what was easily the Tigers' best performance of the year, possibly in the last 2 years. Bega are rated by most astute judges as the benchmark for Group 16 this year, but the Tigers dominated them in every facet of the game.
And we look to have a new cult hero ....welcome to Eden Tommie!
