Under 18s beat Bega

June 6th 2010 by Dave Evelyn

The Tiger cubs faced up to arch enemies Bega on Saturday at George Brown Oval. The Eden 18's have not beaten a Bega side for quite a few years and they lined up with serious intent. The match started well for Eden with Dylan Fletcher finding touch off the kickoff and after just two tackles Chris Challinor stormed over for Eden's first try. Dylan failed with the conversion from wide out and Eden led 4-0. The game was played in intermittent showers and the handling by both sides left a lot to be desired, although the enthusiasm of both sides could not be questioned.
Scrums indispersed with penalties reduced the contest to a fairly dour struggle until Eden scored their second just before half time when Cody Crane scored adjacent to the posts after good lead up work by Andrew Evelyn and Eden took a 10-0 lead to the break. The first half was highlighted by some ferocious defence from Toby Timms. Jacob Young was also responsible for some good hits, while John Hunt, Corey Stewart and John Kendall also made their presence felt with big hits.
The Eden defence was very good right across the field. At the break Eden coach Mick Wykes urged his side to respect possession in the slippery conditions and use the breeze to their advantage in the second half.
Bega were first to score in the second half with a converted try to Scott Fuller to bring the score to 10-6 and revive memories of many games against the Roosters when they have come back from an early defecit to defeat us. But today it was going to be different as the Tigers rallied strongly and when Andrew Evelyn burst through to score under the posts Eden took what appeared to be an unassailable lead of 16-6.
A late consolation try by Bega's Luke McCurley out wide brought the final score to 16-10 and a glorious victory to the Tigers.
For Eden Pixie Geraghty was players player, Cody Crane , John Hunt, Andrew E were standouts amongst a very pleasing team effort. Well done boys!
