Reserves Gritty Defeat
Eden 8 Moruya 36

July 20th 2012 by Dave Evelyn

The Tigers reserve grade side took on competition leaders Moruya in a much anticipated clash in Eden last Sunday. The eden side knew they would have to be at their best and for the first 25 minutes of the match they were very good, holding possession and getting to their kicks. The early defence was torrid, but when Moruya turned possession over it was the Tigers who scored first when Andrew Evelyn burst through from 20 metres out and scored to put the Tigers in the early lead. On resumption the Sharks went on the attack, but even with two penalties to keep the pressure on they were unable to score until Brett Stewart finally crossed for the inevitable try which when converted put the visitors in the lead 6-4. The match developed into a arm wrestle right up to the half time break, when Moruya's Dan Thurling scored and Charlie Nyles converted to extend the lead to 12-4. The forwards were giving their all with Chris Chalker, Andrew Love, Jacob Young and Matt Evelyn tackling anything that moved. Moruya dominated [possession in the early stages of the second half with six consecutive sets and big Billy Elliott crossed for their next try to extend the lead to 18-4. Elliott was almost unstoppable running out wide with good ball service from his inside players, and he scored two tries and another was scored (by an unidentified player ) as the Tigers defence began to tire, extending their lead to 36-4.

The Tigers who were up against much more mature and experienced opposition, never gave up and were rewarded late in the game when Matt Evelyn dived over to take the score to 36-8.

The scoreboard did not give due recognition to the great effort all our players put in. They played some very good football and can use this performance to build momentum towards the end of the season - a finals berth is still not out of the question for this young side. Best in a very good team effort were Chris Chalker, Aaron Aldridge, the Evelyn Brothers Matt and Andrew, and the Brumby brothers Jake and Ben. Great effort boys, lets work hard during the week and show some more good form against Tathra next weekend.
