Eden 22 Tathra 32

August 28th 2012 by Dave Evelyn

The Eden Tigers Reserve Grade side did themselves and their Club proud on Sunday despite going down to Tathra in the elimination final. In a match that pretty much typified their season, the Tigers showed they have the individual skills and hunger to match most sides. The match began at a hectic pace and both sides completed their first four possessions before an attempted intercept gave Tathra a repeat set and led to their first try by Trent Smith. In short time Arthur Coffee had scored tathra's second after Eden failed to kick on the last. After a few scrappy sets by bioth sides Tathra's Jason Gannon scored to give the eagles a 14-0 lead. Eden finally got on the scoreboard when Aaron Aldridge sliced through for a neat try just before the break to leave the score 14-6 and still wide open. Coach Coey Walker was pleased with his charges' efforts and urged them to work hard to complete their sets. The second half started perfectly for the Tigers when they received successive penalties from the first two sets, went on the attack and saw Elvis Tui score a well deserved try. Elvis has had a very good season and his game is improving every week.

The game become a bit tit for tat from this point as Tathra scored a truly remarkable try by Grant Moon, who ran through the middle of the Eden side, ran sideways, then back, then ran through them again to score and extend the lead to 20-10. Eden scored next when Billy Squires scored a good try- score 20-14. Tathra's Trent Smith scored next- 26-14. Eden cult hero Chris Chalker steamrolled his way over next to bring the Tigers within sight of an unlikely win when the score was 26-18. When Andrew Evelyn interecepted and burst down the field it looked as though the Tigers were in with a last ditch chance but Andrew was pulled up inches short. Tathra scored a try shortly after when Sam Awesome touched down to put the game beyond doubt, but there was one highlight left when big Eden forward F.Po crashed over to score a very popular try.

The final score was Tathra 32 Eden 22 but it was only six tries to five in the end Eden's goal kicking being again disappointing. This has been a valuable learning season for many of these players who have not played senior footy before. Eden's long term future looks secure with these young players coming through the ranks. Congratulations to all the players who turned up each week, trained and supported their club, their mates and their coach.
