Eden Reserves Snatch Late Victory

May 19th 2009-By Dave Evelyn

The Tigers Reserve Grade side lined up against their Grand Final opponents from last year in what promised to be an entertaining clash. Bega scored the first try and led 4-0 before Eden's Blake Russel burst over and when Shane Mongta converted the Tiger were in front 6-4. The Bega side played some good football and with a glut of possession and a couple of penalties they ran in the next two tries and led 20-6 before big Ben Holding scored a try after Laurence Bamblett had regained the ball from an Eden kick off. The score at half time was Bega 20 Eden 12.

Sugar Mongta scores one of his three tries in a dominant performance on Sunday

Bega scored first in the second half before Mongta put his stamp on the game in typical fashion scoring and converting to take the score to 24-18. Eden hopes were definitely rising until hostilities broke out onfield, and from the resulting inevitable penalty to Bega Dave Armstrong crashed over and at 30-18 all looked lost for the home side.

But Sugar Mongta had other ideas, scored two quick tries to bring the Tigers back into striking distance with only a few minutes on the clock. Play moved down to the Bega end and Blake Russell was too fast for the Bega defence spearing through the defence to score the winning try to see Eden home 34-30.

The scoreboard shows Eden trailling early in the second half. But their never say die attitude seen them score a late try to eventually run out winners by 34-30. Well done Eden
