Tiger Under 18's struggle in Tathra

June 21st 2009-By Dave Evelyn

The Tiger cubs travelled up to Tathra full of hope for a close tussle with the Pambula Merimbula Tathra United team. The anticipation was somewhat diminished when key players failed to turn up, but the team's enthusiasm was beyond question. The game started with both sides completing their sets and kicking. Eden received an early penalty but didn't take full advantage , turning the ball over. Pambula Merimbula Tathra went back on the attack but made a mistake when they kicked through to Eden fullback Tyrone Thomas who ran 80 metres down the right touchline to score and give Eden an early lead.
Pambula Merimbula Tathra hit back quickly after Eden dropped the ball and then conceded a penalty and Matt Parsons' try put them in front 6-4. Eden's discipline and handling fell away at this crucial stage of the game, and after conceding two penalties and turning the ball over several times PMT's Dylan Aldridge scored another try to put the home side ahead 10-4.

John Hunt refusing to be stoped without a fight.
This sparked the Eden side into action again and Toby Timms scored a try soon after the restart from a clever grubber kick by Tyrone which took the score to 10-8. Dylan Fletcher registered a great 40-20 from the restart but Eden were their own worst enemy dropping the ball to miss a golden opportunity. Pambula Merimbula Tathra fought their way back upfield and scored a converted try just before half time to take a 16-8 lead into the break.
Eden's handling woes continued in the second half when we dropped the ball on zero tackle and then a missed grubber kick resulted in another Pambula Merimbula Tathra try. A lapse in the defensive line let Pambula Merimbula Tathra in for another and suddenly it was 26-8 to the home side. Toby Timms was playing a strong game and was rewarded with his second try to take the score to 26-12 , but any hope of a late Eden resurgence was short lived when Pambula Merimbula Tathra scored the next two tries. The Pambula Merimbula Tathra side were dominating possession and took their tally to 44 before a late try to Matt Evelyn finished the scoring at 44-12.
Robert Geraghty putting in a typical determined effort.
Although the final scoreline was disappointing all the Eden boys could not be faulted as far as their effort was concerned. John Hunt , Ivan Slater , Matt Evelyn and Nick Rowe played their hearts out in the forwards, Chris Challinor, Dylans Fletcher and Wheeler were good and Rob "Pixie" Geraghty played his usual fully committed game.

Next week we face a big test in Bega.
