Undermanned Juniors Gallant in Defeat
Eden 14 Bega 28

August 15th 2011 by Dave Evelyn

The CEMPAC Eden Tigers under 18's took on the Bega Roosters at George Brown Oval last Sunday. The Tigers were undermanned and only had one player on the bench, while the Bega side had a full bench which ultimately determined the result. The Bega side got off to a flying start with 2 penalties before centre Josh Parberry scored their first try. Mitch Coates' conversion gave the visitors an early 6-0 lead. Eden began to get their hands on some possession and put pressure back on Bega, and Jacob Young duly smashed through for Eden's first try which was unconverted. Andrew Evelyn who was captaining the side was very involved defensively while exciting five eight Joe Stewart was steering the side well. Jamie McLeod again impressed in attack and defence. Justin Morton and Jamie Mohammed were also heavily involved.

Bega's Luke Mccauley crossed next after scrappy play from the Tigers who were not respecting possession. This proved costly as Bega scored two more quick tries as the Tiger's defence tired towards the end of the half to extend their lead to 22-4. Eden Coach Corey Stewart urged his charges to hold on to the ball and get to their kicks.

The second half began with both sides spilling possession. Eden received two quick penalties and were rewarded with the next try which was converted to take the score to 22-10. Eden nearly scored next but a golden opportunity was squandered when the ball was lost over the line. Bega struck back with a converted try to take a 28-10 lead into the closing stages.

New Tiger recruit Pete Dunstan was the next to score after a big run by Thumbsy, but the conversion failed and the score moved to 28-14. The Tigers appeared to be finishing strongly, but THREE penalty kicks for touch failed to find the line and another try opportunity was botched by a forward pass. The match finished with Bega worthy winners 28-14, however the Tigers are very confident we can reverse that result when the teams meet again later in the competition. Special mention to another new player Sam Sohaki , and also Brad Elton who copped a broken nose.

There is no game for the 18's next week but everyone is expected to train.
