Tigers Crush Cobargo
Eden 30 Cobargo 6

June 30th 2013 by Dave Evelyn

The Great Southern Inn Eden Tigers really bared their claws last Sunday defeating the visiting Cobargo Eels by 30-6. The final score didn't really reflect the effort the Cobargo side showed, but the sheer class of the Tigers all across the field was evident as they ran in seven tries to one to dominate proceedings. The Tigers were first to score when Ian Smith ran on to a be beautiful Tom Henderson pass to touch down wide out.The try was unconverted and Eden held the 4-0 lead for much of the first half which featured heavy hits by both sets of forwards. Eden scored again after consecutive penalties when prodigal son Ian McBain making a very welcome return to the side burst through to score and herald his return. McBain further endeared himself to the enthusiastic home crowd when he scored another try two sets later, again unconverted, to give the Tigers a 12-0 lead. With minutes to the break the Tigers mounted another attack but a loose pass was intercepted by Cobargo and they scored a converted try to bring them back into the game at 12-6.

The Tigers stuck to their very solid game plan and within three minutes of the second half starting Ian Smith scored his second try to move the score to 16-6. Smith was playing a starring role and was very involved in defence and attack, and scored his third trysoon after to bring the score to 20-6. The Tigers' kickers were not having a good day , but when a deft Henderson kick found Matt Creswick who touched down under the posts we finally kicked a goal. Ian Smith scored his fourth try after a barnstorming run down the touchline in front of the Eden crowd to finish the scoring with Eden victorious 30-6.

This was probably the Tigers best display of the season with a full 80 minute effort. The forwards are hunting as a pack and our halves are giving the outside backs excellent ball. The return of Ian McBain has to be a huge boost for the team, and there is plenty of talk about the imminent return of an Eden legend to add some serious grunt to the forward pack as we move towards the finals. This important win has cemented Eden's spot in the top four, but next week the team will be faced with the stern task of playing Bega Roosters up in Bega. This will be a big day of football and the Tigers hope to see all their fans up in Bega cheering the boys (and girls )on.
